Course overview

SFJ Awards Level 6 Award in Advanced Incident Command in Fire and Rescue Services (N.O.G. Level 3) aims to develop and assess the knowledge and understanding of the U.K. Incident Command System and the practical performance of command skills of FRS learners in Intermediate Incident Command in accordance with NOS EFSM2.

Successful completion of the course will confirm that learners are ready to work as a Level 3 Incident Commander.  

Learners will also have the opportunity to perform several roles within the Incident Command System which will accrue ‘Command Hours’ in accordance with National Operational Guidance e.g:

  • Incident Commander
  • Operations Commander
  • Command Support Officer
  • Command Support Team Member

Learners will be expected to ‘chair’ an ‘on-scene’ tactical coordinating group’ meeting with multi-agency partner organisations.

Learning outcomes

Following the completion of the course the learner will:

  • Understand the principles of decision making when leading people to resolve operational incidents
  • Understand a tactical approach to resolving operational incidents 
  • Understand command and leadership skills within Incident Command Understand the principles of risk management when leading people to resolve operational incident
  • Understand joint working and interoperability
  • Understand the principles of debriefing following an operational incident
  • Be able to evaluate the status of an operational incident 
  • Be able to assume responsibility for action to support those involved in an operational incident 
  • Be able to close down the operational phase of an incident

Learner feedback

Learners will receive written and verbal feedback including: 

  • A THINCS assessment rating.
  • A Learner’s Performance Report (LPR).
  • A development exercise assessment report.
  • Human Intelligence Observation feedback.
