Course overview and learning outcomes

This qualification is nationally recognised and aimed at those who are new to working in a fire safety role and wish to build on their knowledge and gain recognition of their competence. The content is based on the National Occupational Standards and is intended to both support and formalise development in the Fire Safety Officer role and create a solid base for further learning.

All our fire safety courses are part of a development pathway where the candidate must complete each level of qualification before moving onto the next unless they can provide evidence of an equivalent qualification.

The course is delivered over two separate weeks (10 days total) and will provide the knowledge and understanding of core fire safety principles including the technical, legislative and practical skills required to support the role of fire safety auditor and create a solid base for further learning. It is expected that delegates will complete all knowledge assessments and apply learning vocationally from the first week before attending the second week.

Qualifications are awarded through Skills for Justice (SFJ Awards).

This qualification consists of the following 6 mandatory units:

  • Plan and gather evidence for the purpose of fire safety regulation in simple premises
  • Visit simple premises for the purposes of fire safety regulation
  • Assess risks associated with fire in simple premises
  • Identify and report hazards and risks associated with fire in simple  premises
  • Confirm measures are in place to protect people from fire in simple premises
  • Review fire protection systems in simple premises

Our technological solutions enable a blended delivery model, combining e-learning, online and/or face-to-face learning. All learning and assessment will be hosted and supported through the College`s Learning Management System (LMS), which provides learners with a centralised portal to access their learning materials and undertake their written and practical assessments. Throughout the learning and assessment process, skilled and qualified tutors will be readily available to provide guidance and expert advice to learners.

Who should attend and key benefits

The course is designed for individuals new to fire safety or new in the role of a fire safety auditor/advisor. It is also suitable for managers in local authority Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) and in the public/private sectors.

The key benefits are delivery flexibility and a reduced assessment burden. Our delivery model combines all knowledge elements and consists of pre-course learning followed by ten days of tutor led input. There will then be a period back in service/employment where you will continue with your ‘on-the job’ training and mentoring. Candidates will then complete a final simulated practical assessment using 3D virtual gameplay scenarios designed to test practical audit skills.

Course entry criteria

Delegates should be in a fire safety role and have a basic understanding of fire/health and safety. No previous fire safety qualifications/experience is required, although if from an FRS, it would be advantageous to have attended the SFJ Level 2 Fire Safety Check course.

The learning on this course will support the development of delegates to perform a role within a technical fire safety department as an auditor or a fire safety role within the public/private sectors.
