Course overview and learning outcomes

At the FSC we pride ourselves in delivering the best tuition possible with our Instructors within the Fire Craft department sharing over 150 years’ experience operationally and training fire services worldwide.

With changes in architectural design and more innovative construction methodologies, it is essential for today's modern firefighters to understand the optimal tactical ventilation tactics and techniques required for different types of buildings. In order to ensure that our TVI course continues to meet learner requirements, a number of developments have now been incorporated, including extending the course to enable delivery of a more extensive and in-depth curriculum.

The 5-day course includes:

  • New theoretical material to aid with the understanding of tactical ventilation techniques
  • More exacting, practical stairwell protection exercises to enable use of appropriate techniques
  • More exacting, practical basement exercises to enable use of appropriate techniques
  • Encompasses updated tactical phases of ventilation stated in NOG.
  • Extensive range of differing and challenging realistic exercise venues – including simulated commercial, industrial and domestic type scenarios – to provide breadth of experience

This course enables learners to design and deliver training competently and safely using the theory and practical application of tactical ventilation, including Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV).

Topics will include:

  • Ventilation theory
  • Natural ventilation
  • Tactical ventilation and PPV
  • Dynamic risk assessment
  • Sequential ventilation scenarios in all types of buildings and layouts

After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate and apply Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) techniques
  • Demonstrate and apply entry and air control techniques and procedures in compartments
  • Apply operating procedures for a positive pressure ventilation (PPV) training facility
  • Conduct a PPV training session

Who should attend and key benefits

This course is for personnel who design and deliver safe and effective tactical ventilation training in their fire and rescue service. Prior to attendance learners:

  • Ideally, undertaken training in fire behaviour, in order that they possess the underpinning knowledge required to assimilate the practical techniques employed on the course
  • Should have completed a teaching or training qualification (service or national level)
  • Be able to use technology appropriately to support learning
  • Be fit for full operational duties in accordance with service requirements
  • Competent BA wearer

How is the course assessed and accredited?

The course is assessed against the learning outcomes using practical observation and testing of underpinning knowledge of tactical ventilation. This course leads to a level 3 SFJ(A) accredited qualification in Positive Pressure Ventilation.
